Can you imagine the torture of spending your whole life in a crowded cage, in which you can barely stretch your arms or walk?
This is how the majority of hens are exploited for eggs in Indonesia.
Ahold Delhaize, the mother company of Food Lion knows that battery cages are cruel and has announced a commitment to stop selling cage eggs in the US and Europe by 2025. But the company seems to think that animals deserve less respect in Indonesia. Ahold Delhaize refuses to give a deadline to end the confinement of hens that supply its SuperIndo stores in Indonesia.
Why do we need to get rid of cages?
Lack of space
Up to 12 hens can be crammed together in one small cage. This usually means each one of them has a space smaller than an A4 sheet of paper to spend their whole lives in.
Frustration
They cannot express their natural behaviors, such as spreading their wings completely, walking freely, or nesting.This deprivation can lead them to feel constantly frustrated.
Pain
The lack of exercise imposed by battery cages promotes bone diseases such as osteoporosis, making the hens prone to fractures. They stand on the cage metal grid all the time, which often hurt their feet.
Death
Sometimes, dead hens are left to rot for days, so that surviving hens have to live next to the decaying bodies of their peers.
Public health
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that cage systems have a higher prevalence of Salmonella compared to cage-free systems.
